Always Wanted To Run A Marathon? There’s Still Time with a TEAM ICL Guaranteed Spot
Want to join New York City’s biggest party of the year with over 40,000 participants but haven’t ever run a marathon before? You can do it, especially if you begin training in early July, regardless of whether you already are an expert marathoner or a novice jogger, like many of us. In addition to visiting the official 2012 ING New York City Marathon website, read some of the insight shared by two of the TEAM ICL runners and consider joining us!

According to Dr. Shane Konrad , a marathoner who joined TEAM ICL last year and was the first to sign up this year, recalls, “First time I ran, I didn’t start getting serious until early summer. If new runners begin in July, that still gives them four solid months of training. The New York Road Runners (NYRR) website has information on diet, hydration, running tips and even a sample training schedule. It also offers seminar series for first time runners.”

Shane’s top recommendations:
•    “Go for some extra TLC by running with a partner or join a group that’s training for the marathon. This gives you the motivation to get out of bed and run and offers camaraderie and guidance from those who have more experience than you.”
•    “If you prefer to run by yourself, listen to your favorite music. I find this keeps my mind occupied and gives me an extra push when I’m getting tired.”
•    Read the weekly NYRR countdown newsletter, which offers helpful tips and guidance. Once I registered for the marathon, I began receiving it through email.”

Veteran TEAM ICL runner David Kamnitzer , a senior vice president for ICL’s adult mental health services in Brooklyn, gains an “indescribable rush by being part of this international experience…the feeling of accomplishment stays with me and reinforces the fact that if I can achieve this goal, there’s just no stopping me with other challenges.”

According to David, “the marathon requires physical and mental endurance. You have to be prepared on both levels to take on 26.2 miles.”

His tips include:
•    “Think of this as making a commitment to yourself to take care of your body, diet, rest, mental health and training. It’s also important to check in with your primary physician.”
•    “July 1st is the beginning of the 16 weeks of marathon training. Join one of the many programs offered throughout the city, which are geared to all different intensities. The benchmark for marathon running is the initial ability to sustain six miles of running, at any speed, without stopping. Most marathon training programs offer two days of trainings that are 90 minutes long then gradually increase to three-hour classes as distances lengthen.”
•    “To keep going, I sing motivating song lyrics to myself, like, Ain’t No Stopping Us Now. These lyrics become a mantra to me.”
